Summary:
When a financial crisis in 1850s New York leaves three orphaned sisters almost destitute, the oldest, Elise Neumann, understands she must do something. She’s had experience being a seamstress, and the New York Children’s Aid Society has generated a special support: placing out seamstresses and trade young ladies. Despite the fact that Elise doesn’t desire to keep her sisters for employment in Illinois, she realizes this may be their last chance.
The son of 1 of NY City’s wealthiest entrepreneurs, Thornton Quincy faces a dilemma. His dad is usually dying, and in order to decide which of his sons will inherit everything, he’s requiring them to accomplish a couple of things in six months: create a sustainable city along the Illinois Central Railroad, and obtain married. Thornton can be tired of position in his twin brother’s shadow and is determined to earn his father’s challenge. He doesn’t anticipate meeting a feisty youthful woman on his way west, though.
