Summary:
The Machine Halts is a science fiction story. It describes a world by which almost all human beings have lost the capability to live on the top of Earth. Each individual lives in isolation inside a ‘cell’, with all physical and spiritual needs met by the omnipotent, global Machine. Many human beings welcome this development, because they are skeptical and fearful of first-hand knowledge. People ignore that humans created the Machine, and address it as a mystical entity whose needs supersede their very own. Those who usually do not accept the deity of the device are considered ‘unmechanical’ and so are threatened with “Homelessness”. Ultimately, the device apocalyptically collapses, as well as the civilization of the Machine concludes.
