The Demon in Democracy: Totalitarian Temptations in Free Societies Audiobook (Free)
Summary:
Ryszard Legutko lived and suffered less than communism for decades-and he fought using the Polish ant-communist motion to abolish it. Having lived for two decades under a liberal democracy, nevertheless, he has discovered that these two politics systems have far more in keeping than one might believe. They both stem from the same historical root base in early modernity, and acknowledge similar presuppositions about background, society, religion, politics, lifestyle, and human character.
In The Demon in Democracy, Legutko explores the shared objectives between both of these political systems, and explains how liberal democracy has over time lurched towards same goals as communism, albeit without Soviet-style brutality.
Both systems, says Legutko, reduce human nature to that of the common man, who’s led to believe himself liberated from your obligations of days gone by. Both the communist guy as well as the liberal democratic guy refuse to confess that there exists anything of value outside the politics systems to which they pledged their commitment. And both systems refuse to undertake any crucial study of their ideological prejudices.
