Summary:
On November 23, 1942, German U-Boats torpedoed the Uk ship Benlomond. It sank in the Atlantic in two a few minutes. The only real survivor was a second steward named Poon Lim who, without knowledge of the ocean, were able to stay alive for 133 days on a little wooden raft. Based on three years of interviews, Singular Survivor reconstructs Poon’s extraordinary ordeal. We observe a ship’s crew that noticed him but refused to choose him up; his ingenious ways of trapping drinking water and catching seafood (later used in US Navy teaching films); and his entrance at land, only to think it is an impenetrable jungle. When he was finally rescued on the mouth of the Amazon River, Poon was hailed as the “World’s Champ Survivor.” He still holds the Guinness World Record for success at sea. His story is an amazing story of a man’s fortitude when confronted with overwhelming odds.
