Summary:
Made by Blake Edwards (of Red Panther fame), Richard Gemstone, Private Detective came to NBC radio in 1949 starring film actor and crooner Dick Powell.
Powell had recently played Philip Marlowe in the popular RKO film Murder My Nice and jumped at the chance to play a suave detective on radio. Richard Gemstone was a lighthearted New York-based private eye who liked ribbing the cops and singing music to his millionairess sweetheart, Helen Asher (performed by Virginia Gregg). It’s theme “Keep about Richard Gemstone, Personal Detective, Collection 1 it to Appreciate” was whistled by Powell at the beginning of each episode.
Powell’s firm (Four Star Tv) produced a Television version of Richard Diamond, Personal Detective for CBS in 1957. David Janssen, who later gain fame as Dr. Richard Kimble within the Fugitive was solid as TV’s Richard Gemstone. Sam, Diamond’s beautiful secretary in it series, was just shown in the waist down.
