Victor Rios was raised in the ghetto of Oakland, California, in the 1980s and 90s. A previous gang member and juvenile delinquent, Rios managed to escape the bleak outcome of many of his friends and gained a PhD at Berkeley and came back to his hometown to review how inner-city youthful Latino and African American young boys develop their sense of self amid crime and intense policing. Rios followed a group of forty delinquent dark and Latino boys for 3 years. These males found themselves inside a vicious cycle, caught inside a spiral of punishment and incarceration as they were harassed, profiled, watched, and disciplined at youthful ages, also before that they had dedicated any crimes, eventually leading many of them to satisfy the destiny anticipated of these. But beyond a fatalistic accounts of the marginalized teenagers, Rios discovers that the program that criminalizes them and limitations their opportunities, sparks level of resistance and an elevated awareness that motivates some to transform their lives and become productive citizens.
