He flags in the false binaries often marketed between good (patriotic) and poor (self-centred) black sportswomen and men … it’s a valuable respond of remembrance of having stars who put their careers on the line in search of a moral ideal.’ Observer
Few people watch sport because of its politics. Yet what happens for the field of play frequently reflects the problems in our society.
Such was the case in the eighties, when dark footballers emerged from the dressing space to get bananas being hurled from your stands, and racially motivated attacks and law enforcement harassment were the norm.
Today, things have got improved. Crowds are less hostile and celebrities like Anthony Joshua and Sir Mohamed Farah are among our many revered sporting heroes. But also for athletes of color, success within the field rarely changes to power from it. Prejudice and mistreatment may be less overt, however they stay – often in front of our eyes, frequently without us paying attention. The same can be stated of British culture: things are better, however we continue being divided by and in denial of racism.
No Win Race is an individual exploration of the complexities and biases implicit in getting dark in Britain, told through the prism of sport. Covering the period between your Brixton ‘riots’ and Brexit, this is a book for individuals who desire honest understanding into UK competition relations, and for anybody who senses that sport is normally more than just a game.
