Summary:
A BBC Radio 4 full-cast version of Christopher Marlowe’s notorious family portrait of the weak ruler in thrall to his passions, who pays off the ultimate cost for choosing his center over his political duties. Originally broadcast 13 September 2009 in the ‘Theatre on 3’ slot machine. Edward, preoccupied by the banishment of his lover, Gaveston, barely acknowledges the nascent crises that threaten his world. Key among his critics is the morally righteous Mortimer, horrified by the king’s legal lapse of responsibility and yet in a position to countenance the additional crime of taking arms against his king. As their enmity develops, and Mortimer’s political grasp tightens, he needs Queen Isabella like a fan, and plots the death of Edward, even after his abdication. Toby Jones superstars as Edward, Patrick Kennedy as Mortimer and Anastasia Hille as Queen Isabella. Made by Jessica Dromgoole.
