However when he noticed the set of taken and vandalized items – including a stethoscope, some older flannel trousers, a container of chocolates, a slashed rucksack and a diamond ring found in a plate of soup – he congratulated the warden, Mrs Hubbard, on a ‘unique and beautiful problem’.

The list produced absolutely no sense whatsoever. But, reasoned Poirot, if this was merely a petty thief at the job, why was everyone on the hostel therefore frightened?
