My mother named me Gabriella, following my grandmother who, coincidentally, didn’t want to meet up me while i was created because my mom was unmarried, and therefore living in sin. My mother has told me the storyplot many, many, MANY, situations of how, when she confessed to my grandmother that she was pregnant with me, her mom beat her. BEAT HER! She was twenty-five. That story may be the basis of my sexual education and has reiterated why it is important to wait around about Gabi, A WOMAN in Items until you’re married to provide it up. So now, each time I go out with a guy, my mom says, ‘Ojos abiertos, piernas cerradas.’ Eye open, legs closed. That’s so far as the parrots and the bees talk has truly gone. And I don’t mind it. I don’t always agree with that whole wait around until you’re wedded crap, though. After all, that is America as well as the 21st hundred years; not Mexico a hundred years back. But, obviously, I can’t tell my mother that because she’ll think I’m bad. Or even worse: seeking to be White.

Gabi Hernandez chronicles her this past year in high school in her diary: Cindy’s being pregnant, Sebastian’s coming out, the cute boys, her father’s meth habit, and the meals she craves. And on top of that, the poetry that helps forge her identification.
