Summary:
Mags have been working at the Pieters’ mine, slaving at night, cold seams, looking for sparklies, for as long as he could remember. The kids who worked well the mine had been orphans, kids who was simply abandoned, who experienced dropped their parents, or were generally undesirable. But Mags was different. Mags was “Poor Bloodstream,” because his parents had been bandits who was simply killed within a raid by the Royal Guard. “Bad Blood” because he’d been within a cradle in the bandits’camp. Mags understood nothing of the globe beyond the mine, and was unacquainted with how unusual his paltry lifetime was. Then some strangers on large white horses forced their way at night Pieters family members and carried him apart to Haven to become a Herald Trainee. Suddenly the whole world opened up for him. He was warm and well fed for the very first time in his life, and he previously Dallen, his Companion, who seemed more miraculous than an angel. But the globe from the Collegium was not all heavenly. There was political upheaval in Valdemar’s capital, for the court have been infiltrated by international “diplomats,” who seemed to be more interested in seeding discontent than in actual diplomacy…and Mags appeared to be the only person who’d noticed…
