The world is mainly water when Pearl is born. The floods have left America a cluster of about After the Flood little islands with roving trade ships and raiders.
Pearl knows little of her dad Jacob and elder sister Row, who all left her mom Myra when she was pregnant with her. Between them they put up, with Myra angling and trading to create ends meet, exploring from isle to island on Parrot, the vessel Myra’s grandfather made before he died.
