The world is mainly water when Pearl is born. The floods have left America a cluster of about After the Flood little islands with roving trade ships and raiders.

Pearl knows little of her dad Jacob and elder sister Row, who all left her mom Myra when she was pregnant with her. Between them they put up, with Myra angling and trading to create ends meet, exploring from isle to island on Parrot, the vessel Myra’s grandfather made before he died.

Whilst their life is a tranquil one, Myra still aches for the daughter she once lost. Whenever a possibility encounter reveals that Row might be alive, Myra packages up six-year-old Pearl and jointly they commence a dangerous voyage to The Valley, where rumours of assault and breeding ships run rampant.
