Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll produced their radio debut January 12, 1926, as the comedic, blackface individuals Sam ‘n’ Henry. On March 19, 1928 they introduced Amos ‘n’ Andy, which continued to become perhaps one of the most popular and longest operating programs in radio background. During the height of its reputation, nearly the entire country listened to the 15-minute, Monday through Friday activities of Amos ‘n’ Andy. Department stores open in the evening piped in the broadcasts, so shoppers wouldn’t about Amos n’ Andy Show, Collection 2 miss an episode; concert halls scheduled their features to get rid of just prior to the start of Amos ‘n’ Andy so they as well could pipe it in. The individuals were members of The Mystic Knights of the Sea Lodge, of which George Stevens was ‘The Kingfish.’ Amos ‘n’ Andy ran the Fresh-Air Taxi Company, with the even more stable, married Amos doing a lot of the function while Andy chased girls. One of the best-remembered sequences was enough time Andy nearly married Madame Queen. In 1943, after 4,091 quarter-hour episodes, it switched to a half-hour weekly comedy. As the five-a-week show often experienced a quiet, easygoing feeling, the new edition was a brassy Hollywood-style creation, complete with studio audience, full ensemble of supporting actors and complete orchestra. Many of the half-hour programs were written by Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher, later the writing team for Leave It to Beaver and The Munsters.
