Summary:
Southwest Arizona, a century ago. An uneasy truce is present between the remote control frontier community of Picture City and the neighboring Apaches. That delicate serenity can be shredded when the bodies of two white men are found hideously mutilated. The angry townspeople are certain the “savages” possess damaged the treaty, but Billjohn Finley, the neighborhood Indian agent, doubts that darker, even more unholy forces could be at the job. There’s a high, dark stranger around, who rode in wearing the inactive men’s clothing. A stranger who may not be entirely human.
Originally published like a mass-market Western in 1994, Shadow on the Sun continues to be largely overlooked simply by horror fans and general readers. But this story of supernatural terror is sure to chill the bloodstream of Matheson’s many followers.
